Description

These Halloween Sugar Cookies (Lofthouse Style!) are soft, sweet, and adorned with festive colors. With simple ingredients like sugar, butter, and festive sprinkles, they are ideal for holiday gatherings and a treat for all ages.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/2 cup butter (softened)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • orange & purple & green food coloring
  • halloween sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Whisk together flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and cornstarch in a medium bowl and set aside.
  2. Cream the softened butter and sugar in a large bowl using an electric mixer for about 5 minutes until light and fluffy.
  3. Mix in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract, followed by stirring in the sour cream.
  4. Combine the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients and mix gently until just combined to avoid overmixing.
  5. Shape the dough into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill in the fridge for at least one hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F when ready to bake.
  7. Roll out the chilled dough to about 1/4 inch thick and cut into circles using a 3-inch cookie cutter.
  8. Place the cut cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 8–9 minutes until just barely golden for a soft texture.
  9. Allow cookies to cool completely before frosting them.
  10. To make the buttercream, beat the softened butter until fluffy, then gradually mix in powdered sugar and vanilla.
  11. Add milk to reach a smooth, spreadable consistency, adjusting as necessary.
  12. Divide frosting into 3 bowls and color each with your chosen food coloring.
  13. Frost each cookie with a piping bag or spatula and top with Halloween sprinkles.

Notes

Chilling the dough is crucial for the right texture.
Cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week.
Feel free to decorate with any festive sprinkles.
