Description

This Ridiculously-Good Steak Lo Mein delivers mouthwatering flavor in a quick meal. With tender steak, vibrant vegetables, and delicious noodles, it’s a fantastic choice for a busy weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon potato starch
  • ¼ cup water, plus more as desired
  • ¼ cup dark soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons shaoxing wine
  • 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon five spice powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground white pepper
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1 lb beef sirloin flap steak, sliced into strips
  • 23 tablespoons olive oil, plus more if needed
  • 1 large carrot, peeled & cut into batons
  • 5 ounces shiitake mushrooms, sliced
  • ½ large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 lb pre-cooked frozen lo mein noodles
  • 68 scallions, thinly sliced, plus more for garnishing

Instructions

  1. Combine potato starch and water in a bowl, whisking until fully dissolved. Add soy sauce, shaoxing wine, brown sugar, five spice powder, white pepper, and sesame oil, whisking until combined.
  2. Add sliced beef to a bowl and coat with 2 tablespoons of sauce. Marinate for at least 30 minutes, setting the remaining sauce aside.
  3. In a wok or large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of oil over medium-high heat. Add the beef in batches, cooking until golden brown and slightly crispy, about 2-3 minutes per batch. Transfer cooked beef to a plate, adding more oil if necessary.
  4. In the same pan, add 1 tablespoon of oil if needed. Cook the carrots, mushrooms, onion, and bell pepper until softened and lightly caramelized, about 4-5 minutes. Add garlic, cooking for an additional 2 minutes until fragrant.
  5. Cook the lo mein according to package directions, then drain and set aside.
  6. Return the beef to the pan along with juices. Add the cooked lo mein, remaining sauce, and scallions. Stir-fry until well combined and glossy, cooking for about 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  7. Remove from heat. Optionally, add a splash of water or broth to loosen the sauce. Serve immediately with garnished scallions.

Notes

For extra flavor, marinate the beef longer if time allows.
Feel free to use any vegetables you have on hand for added nutrition.
Adjust the amount of sauce according to your taste preference.
